Vocal Cord Dysfunction

A. Relaxed Throat Breath

  1. Place your hand on your abdomen (above the belt, below the belt, or both) when needed.
  2. Inhale into your abdomen — abdomen goes out.
  3. Exhale from your abdomen — abdomen comes in.
  4. Inhale with a relaxed throat:
    1. Tongue on the floor of the mouth
    2. Lips gently closed
    3. Jaw gently released
  5. Exhale on a gentle /s/ sound.
  6. Do 5 of these breaths:
    1. In the morning
    2. At noon
    3. Before bedtime
    4. Before medications
    5. As it fits into your schedule

B. Use This Breathing at Any Sign of Tightness or Stridor

If tightness or stridor occurs during activity, stop the activity, do the breathing exercises until it stops, and then resume activity gradually.

C. Remember

  1. Tightness or stridor can be released by breathing exercises.
  2. Do exercises easily — don't push your shoulders or chest. Concentrate on "letting" air in and out.
  3. Go into new activities and sports gradually.
