Eosinophilic disorders are conditions in which the body produces too many eosinophils, a type of white blood cell involved in inflammation and immune defense. When eosinophil levels become elevated in the blood or tissues, they can contribute to inflammation in organs such as the lungs, skin, sinuses, gastrointestinal tract, nerves, or heart. These conditions include eosinophilic asthma, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), EGPA, and hypereosinophilic syndromes (HES), among others. Some people experience symptoms like wheezing, swallowing difficulty, rashes, abdominal pain, or sinus disease, while others may not feel sick at first.
Evaluation typically involves blood tests to measure eosinophil counts, stool or tissue samples when appropriate, and imaging or organ-specific testing based on symptoms. Because eosinophils can cause progressive tissue damage when significantly elevated, timely assessment and diagnosis are important. Treatment depends on the underlying condition and may include medications that reduce inflammation or directly target eosinophils. If you have been told your eosinophil count is high, or you have symptoms thought to be related to elevated eosinophils, consulting with a specialist can help ensure proper evaluation and management.
