Children typically begin to exhibit allergy as nasal congestion that may result in ear infections and sinus infections. The most common allergies in early childhood are the indoor allergens such as house dust mite and pet dander. As the child approaches school age, outdoor allergens become more important, in particular pollen and some mold spores.
Testing for allergies in children is a simple test of small pricks done quickly in panels. These tests will identify any allergic sensitization. Based on the results specific recommendations can be made on avoidance of allergen exposure as well as what the best medication to prescribe if needed for additional control of symptoms.
